Dr. Ehrenfeld divides his time among clinical practice, research, and directing the strategic and operational advancement of Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment, a statewide philanthropy that serves as a resource to health research, education, and community initiatives across Wisconsin and seeks to improve the health of the state’s residents.

Dr. Ehrenfeld’s research, which focuses on understanding how information technology can improve patient safety, outcomes, and health equity, has been funded by the NIH, the Department of Defense, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, and the AMA. The unifying theme of his work has been to advance understanding of the science behind how technology can change behavior, reduce variability, and facilitate improved health system reliability and performance. His work has led to the presentation of more than 250 abstracts as well as the publication of more than 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Medical Systems and has co-authored 18 clinical textbooks. He also provides advice and support to the World Health Organization (WHO) Digital Health Technical Advisory Group as an expert in digital health.

Active in the American Medical Association (AMA) since medical school, Dr. Ehrenfeld was elected to the esteemed AMA Board of Trustees in 2014, serving as chair in 2019-2020. Previously he has served on the governing councils of both the AMA Resident and Fellow Section and the AMA Young Physicians Section, as well as the governing boards of the American Society of Anesthesiologists Resident Component and the Illinois State Medical Society. Dr. Ehrenfeld is a former speaker for the Massachusetts Medical Society, where he was the youngest officer in the 228-year history of the organization.
